*British, WW2, The Atlantic Star Medal with Ribbon*
This is probably one of the rarest of the “Star” medals. The Atlantic Star is a military campaign medal, instituted by the United Kingdom in May 1945 for award to British Commonwealth forces who took part in the Battle of the Atlantic, the longest continuous campaign of the Second World War. It was mainly for those who were part of shipping convoys, a mission that many did not come back from. It was also for those who were their escorts and anti-submarine people. The requirement was twelve months of service afloat or four months of airborne service.
Campaign medals were instituted by the United Kingdom on 8 July 1943 – the first being the 1939–43 Star (later named the 1939–1945 Star) and the Africa Star. By May 1945, a total of eight campaign stars and nine clasps had been instituted by the United Kingdom to acknowledge wartime service. Later additions included the Arctic Star and the Bomber Command Clasp, introduced on 26 February 2013. A maximum of six campaign stars could be awarded to any individual, with certain clasps signifying eligibility for additional stars. However, only one clasp could be worn on each campaign star.
