~ Chinese Qing Dynasty Nephrite Jade Carving Mythical Chi-lin Creature ~
A lovely hand carved jade figure of a mythical creature, dating to the Qing Dynasty era or earlier.
This mythical creature goes by different names in literature: Bixie – a kind of unicorn with rearward pointing horn, Chi-lin – A creature with a lion head, wings and bifurcated tail. In Cantonese it is ‘Pei Yao’.
The animal is regarded as the protector of the house and family.
The creature is crouching, with horn directed to the rear.
The nephrite jade is celadon in colour with chocolate brown to the beasts left side.

The piece has a length of 4.6 inches (11 cm), a depth of 2.4 inches (6 cm) & a height of 1.6 inches (4.3 cm).
