~ Circa 1880/1900 Ships Compass Binnacle By Observator Of Rotterdam ~
A fine octagonal teak wood and brass binnacle made by the company N.V . Observator of Rotterdam.
To the front is a manufacturers plate reading ‘N.V. Observator, Rotterdam’, also to the front is a spirit level by the same company.
The fully gimballed compass is stamped to the brass ring ‘568043’, again by Observator.
The binnacle has an adjustable vintage but later electric lamp of brass, this is fitted to an open cowl rather than a fully enclosed one suggesting it was used in an enclosed bridge only. This is a known pattern for Observator.
It is complete with its adjustable iron Kelvin compensating balls and a cylinder at the back for storing the finders bar complete with its lid.
~ Dimensions ~
The binnacle measure approximately 30 inches across, 22 inches deep and 52 inches high.
~ Condition ~
The binnacle is in very decent condition. The compass glass is free from cracks. The compass points north as intended. There appears to be something missing as there are several screw holes and a circular mark to the front, left panel, perhaps another spirit level.
