~ Doulton Lambeth Silicon Ware Tobacco Jar c1880’s ~
A stylish Doulton Lambeth Silicon ware pot or tobacco jar, dating from the early 1880’s.
Doulton Silicon Ware consists of a very hard high-fired stoneware body in light brown and blue, covered in a barely perceptible matt glaze known as ‘smear’.
It was mainly produced from 1880 to 1912, although examples exist up to 1930.
This pot is of cylindrical form with a bulbous lower edge. It is complete with lid with finial handle.
The pot is decorated with raised mosaic style patterns in blue and white with gilt detailing .
The lid has a sun burst style pattern emanating from the handle with a blue and gilt pattern border.
The base of the pot has the ‘Doulton Silicon Lambeth’ stamp. This stamp was used between 1881 – 1912.
The pot also has an ‘X’ number hand painted to the base of ‘X898’ which dates the piece between 1883 – 1886.
There are other various marks to base and also the underside of the lid one of which looks like a signature beginning with the letter ‘S’ (please see images).
~ Dimensions ~
The pot has a diameter of 11.5cm (4 ½ inches) and a height of 11.5cm (4 ½ inches).
It weighs 640g.
~ Condition ~
The lid has a few small chips around the edge as does the raised ‘ring’ to the base (though this is not seen).
One small area of the bulbous lower edge has some loss of blue glaze.
The pot is otherwise in a very nice condition with no other damages and only very light age wear.
