French brass fireman’s helmet crest. A style frequently seen during the First World War. The front plate bears the Classic French fireman symbol of a flaming grenade within the central shield insignia flanked by an olive branch and oak branch. A three part banner above reads Sapeurs, Pompiers, de St Maxent which in English translates as Firemen of St Maxent. St Maxent is a commune in the Somme area of northern France near the Belgian border where this was originally used in active service.
*Condition*
Has excess polish in crevices, and a minor depression to the top left of the shield.
Neither of these spoil the overall look of the piece.
