~ Early Georgian Silver Lidded Jug Tankard By Francis Spilsbury 1734 ~
A nice George I silver tankard by the well known London silversmith Francis Spilsbury dated 1734.
The tankard is of a cylindrical shape which tapers slightly towards the lid. It is plain but for a band of silver towards the base.
It has a spout with pierced filter, a scroll handle with bone inserts and a shaped thumb piece attached to a hinged, stepped dome lid.
The handle is monogrammed ‘B.T.M’.
The tankard is hallmarked in several places for Silver, London, 1734 and has a makers mark of ‘F.S’ for Francis Spilsbury.
~ Dimensions ~
The tankard has a base of 13cm (5 inches) diameter of and a width across the handle/spout of 21cm (8 ¼ inches).
It has a height of 18.5cm (7 ¼ inches).
It weighs 860g.
~ Condition ~
The handle is made of a separate piece of silver attached via two wood inserts pinned into place. The pins are missing and one of the pieces of wood is partially damaged. The handle is currently wedged on but will need a little repair, but this is quite a simple task.
The lid has a small area where the rim is coming away slightly from a previous knock.
The tankard has the odd minor bit of tarnish, the odd little dent and scratch but overall is in a very nice condition for a piece of silver of this age.
