Description

~ Early Smith Civil War Artillery Model Carbine in 50 cal. ~

The piece has a 21-5/8 inch barrel, octagonal at breach becoming round at muzzle. Original sling swivels (not saddle bar rod and ring). The sling swivels indicate this was manufactured prior to August, 1863.
The low serial No 295 may mean that this was one of the 1500 carbines ordered by the American Ordnance Office in August 1861 but not delivered until January 1862, so probably 1861 manufacture.

In total about 11,000 Artillery Model Carbines (with sling swivels) are estimated to have been made up to 1863 although some of the later ones were not issued because the sling swivel versions were much easier for the cavalry to carry. These carbines were issued to artillery men and cavalry.

The gun has a clear address on left hand side of breech (ADDRESS POULTNEY AND TRIMBLE BALTIMORE. U.S.A; SMITHS PATENT JUNE 23 1857; MANUFACTURED BY MASS ARMS CO CHICOPEE FALLS. only.

The Smith carbine saw extensive use during the Civil War with over 31,000 delivered to the Ordnance Department. There were three manufacturers each reportedly with their own serial number range starting at 1. This is an early Smith carbine manufactured by Massachusetts Arms Co, Chicopee Falls.

~ Condition ~

This one is in fine condition with good tight action, hinge slightly worn, good barrel rifling and bright bore.
Metalwork is nice dark brown patina with inspection mark W on rear LHS of barrel. All markings are sharp, wood is sound, slight cracks on both side of wrist, minor chipping and repair to forearm wood adjacent to barrel and otherwise showing usual marks
and dents from use.
