*East Germany (DDR), Cold War - Dated 1976, NVA Winter Ushanka Hat, Size 52 (Extra-Small), VEB Perfekt Berlin, Grey Faux Fur, Original Issue*
A very attractive and original East German Nationale Volksarmee (NVA) winter ushanka hat, dating to 1976 and produced for issue to the armed forces of the German Democratic Republic (DDR). This classic Cold War-era winter cap is of the standard grey field pattern, featuring the characteristic soft grey wool outer body, thick grey faux fur trim (“fish fur”), fold-down ear flaps, and press-stud fasteners for securing the flaps either over the crown or beneath the chin for cold-weather protection.
The interior retains its original grey lining with clear issue markings including NVA, size 52, factory code 1856, and date code R, together with the additional factory/control number 164. The 1856 code identifies manufacture by VEB Perfekt Berlin, the principal East German state factory responsible for military headgear production, while the date code R corresponds to 1976 manufacture during the height of the Cold War.
Size 52 is a smaller issued size, less commonly encountered than the larger collector sizes, and the hat remains a very good honest example of standard Warsaw Pact military winter equipment. The original front cockade appears to have been removed, with only a faint impression remaining to the front panel, which is commonly seen on surplus examples.
These ushankas were standard winter issue across the NVA and were worn by army personnel, border troops, and support services throughout the 1960s–1980s. Their practical heavy construction and distinctive silhouette make them one of the most recognisable pieces of East German military headgear.
*Condition*
Very good original condition overall, with light service wear and minor age-related handling marks consistent with military issue. Faux fur remains thick and presentable, press studs function correctly, and the interior markings remain legible. Front insignia/cockade no longer present, leaving a faint outline where previously fitted. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
