~ Fine Cased Model Of The 1797 Sloop HMS Snake ~
This model was commissioned by us, it is based on the Caldercraft kit. The model was constructed by Phillip Holmes of the Isle of Wight over a period of 6 months and 950 hours work. We retain his services and he is now working on HMS Pegasus due for completion in Spring 2014.
It is a fine fully rigger model with extensive deck detailing. The plank on frame hull has been sheathed with hundreds of individual copper plaques.
The glazed case has two brass plates, one with the ships name, ‘HMS SNAKE 1797’, and the other with the makers name, ‘P. HOLMES Shipwright, Cowes, England’.
~ HMS Snake ~
The Snake class were ship rigged sloops. This kind of ship was used for general trade.
It had a flush deck and nine cannons or carronades each side. They were very popular being fast and seaworthy.
HMS Snake had a full ordinance of 18 pounder cannonades which replaced the carriage guns because at close quarters the short range cannonades proved devastating to their opponents.
The ship displacement was 382 tons and she had a crew of 121.

The case is 100 cm (39.5 inches) long, 48.5 cm (19 inches) wide and 76 cm (30 inches) high.
