~ Framed Chromolithographic Print ‘Nelson’s First Farewell’ after George W. Joy ~
A lovely quality chromolithographic print titled ‘Nelson’s First Farewell’ after an original painting by the Irish painter George W. Joy (1844 – 1925).
The image shows the then 13-year-old (Lord Horatio) Nelson dressed in a midshipman’s uniform and saying farewell to his grandmother on his first departure for sea in 1771.
The original painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1883 under the longer title ‘Thirty Years Before Trafalgar, Nelsons’s First Farewell’
The print is mounted and presented in a glazed wood frame.
~ George W. Joy ~
Joy was born in Antrim, Ireland in 1844. He was initially destined for the military but after a foot injury at young age, his father declared him unfit for military service. Joy was then educated at Harrow School and eventually pursued a career as an artist. He studied in London’s South Kensington School of Art and later at the Royal Academy.
In 1868 Joy went to Paris where for two years he was a student of Charles-François Jalabert and Léon Bonnat.
Mainly a history and genre painter, he was a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy, the Salon des Artistes Français and the Royal Hibernian Academy.
He became a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1895.
Later in life, Joy entered the Artists Rifles where he was known as a good shot, representing Ireland several times. He spent many winters in Swanage from 1896 and eventually retired to Purbrook, Hampshire where he died in 1925.
