Description

*French, Bronze “Russian Dancer” after Demetre Chiparus, Signed, Marble Base*

A finely cast bronze figure of a Russian Dancer after the celebrated Art Deco sculptor Demetre H. Chiparus (1886–1947). The dancer is depicted in exotic costume with outstretched arms, richly detailed jewellery and headpiece, standing poised on tiptoe. The piece is signed “DH Chiparus” to the base and bears the foundry roundel “Bronze Garanti Paris J.B. Déposé”. Mounted on a three-tiered stepped marble base of red/orange veined alabaster set on a black plinth.

Measurements: 48 cm tall (including base), hand span 33 cm, base 19.9 cm × 12.4 cm.

Historical Note:
Demetre Chiparus was among the most important sculptors of the Art Deco movement, famed for his dynamic figures of dancers, circus performers, and exotic women inspired by the Ballets Russes, orientalism, and Egyptomania of the 1920s. His original Russian Dancer figures were cast in Paris by Etling and other foundries, often in chryselephantine (bronze with ivory elements). This example is a bronze-only cast, faithful in design to the Art Deco originals and retaining their glamour and decorative appeal.

The roundel stamp “Bronze Garanti Paris J.B. Déposé” was used in France during the 20th century as a commercial guarantee that the piece was cast in solid bronze rather than spelter. The initials “J.B.” are generally linked to the Parisian foundry J. Borel, which produced decorative bronzes for both the French and export markets. The inclusion of Déposé indicates that the design was registered. This mark is commonly encountered on later reissues of Chiparus and other Art Deco designs, and confirms French manufacture.

*Condition*
Good overall condition. Bronze with rich medium brown patination showing light surface wear in places. Some minor natural fissures and inclusions to the marble base. No significant damage or losses. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
