~ 1831 Pattern General Officers Mameluke Sword ~
The 1831 Pattern General Officers Sword (often historically associated with 1827) is a curved, scimitar-style weapon with an ivory-colored hilt, used by high-ranking British Army commanders. It features a gold-plated hilt and crossguard and is heavily etched with a crossed baton and sword.
The blade features a distinctively curved, single-edged blade that becomes double-edged near the point. It is etched with George V cipher, foliate scrolls, and the crossed sword and baton symbol denoting a General.
The Duke of Wellington: Arthur Wellesley, the first Duke of Wellington, became Commander-in-Chief of the British Army in 1827. He carried a traditional Eastern Mameluke sword gifted to him by an Indian potentate.
Wellington's personal preference heavily influenced British military fashion. By 1831, this curved scimitar became the strict regulation sidearm for all Major-Generals and above.
~ Condition ~
Please refer to the images for the condition. The blade is in excellent condition, and the wire on the grip has very minor loosening. The sword fits the scabbard well.
~ Dimensions ~
The sword is 99cm (39 inches) in total length with an 84cm (33 inches) blade.
