Background
The Pistole Parabellum, commonly known as the Luger, is a toggle-locked, recoil-operated semi-automatic pistol produced from 1898 to 1948. Designed by Georg Luger as an improvement on the Borchardt Automatic Pistol, it was manufactured by Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken (DWM) and other companies. The first model, the Modell 1900 Parabellum, was adopted by the Swiss army in 1900, followed by the German Navy in 1904. The German Army adopted a modified version in 1908, known as the P08, chambered in 9×19mm Parabellum. It was eventually succeeded by the Walther P38.
The Luger is well-known for its use by Germans during World War I and World War II, as well as by the Weimar Republic and the postwar East German Volkspolizei. Initially introduced in 7.65mm Parabellum, the P08 is notable for being the pistol that popularized the 9×19mm Parabellum cartridge. Its distinctive design has made it a popular choice for villainous characters in fiction, due to its association with Nazi Germany.
