*German, WW2, 2nd Pattern Luftwaffe Officers Summer Tunic Eagle, Makers Mark Double A, for F.W. Assmann und Söhne – Ludenscheid and D.R.G.M. for Deutsches Reichesgebrauchsmuster*
This Luftwaffe Summer Uniform Metal Breast Eagle, produced by F. W. Assmann & Söhne of Lüdenscheid, is crafted from an injection-molded aluminum-alloy base with a silver wash. The obverse features the 2nd pattern Luftwaffe eagle with outstretched wings, clutching a swastika in one of its talons. The full-back reverse is maker marked with “A” and “D.R.G.M.” (The G.M. is obscured)(Deutsches Reichesgebrauchsmuster). Double (A + DRGM) marks were used on all Assmann badges made in aluminium from 1936-1938. It includes a stamped catch, round wire catch, and round wire pin, all of which remain fully functional.
By order of the Reich Minister of Aviation (Der Reichsminister der Luftfahrt Nr.30573/35 geh. Kdos. D IV, 3 Az.64.c. 10) on March 1, 1935, the Luftwaffe pattern national eagle was officially introduced for all Luftwaffe personnel. This design originated from the emblem introduced on August 18, 1934, worn by Fliegerschaft personnel of the Deutscher Luftsportsverband (DLV), the covert civilian precursor to the Luftwaffe. The first pattern national eagle was used until it was slightly modified and a second pattern was introduced in late 1936 or early 1937. Regulations required the national eagle to be worn on almost all headgear and the right breast of nearly all uniforms, with minor exceptions.
Officers typically used hand-embroidered breast eagles, whereas EM/NCO ranks were issued machine-embroidered versions. Officers were permitted to wear a white summer uniform from April 1 to September 30 each year, and the insignia on these uniforms were generally removable for ease of cleaning. Consequently, a detachable metal breast eagle was produced exclusively for the white summer tunic. Early examples were made of nickel silver, nickel-plated tombak, or aluminum. Later examples, due to metal shortages, were produced from plated zinc and then silver-washed zinc.
