The Bronze Close Combat Clasp, known as Nahkampfspange in German, is a distinguished award crafted from bronzed zinc. Its front side features a Reichsadler (national eagle) above a crossed bayonet and hand grenade, surrounded by sun rays and adorned with oak leaves and acorns. The reverse side is plain with a square non-magnetic backing plate horizontal pin back with a barrel hinge and a flat wire catch on the reverse, the maker’s mark FEC. W. E. / PEEKHAUS / BERLIN on the left and the designer’s mark AUSF. A.G.M.U.K. GABLONZ on the right.
The Close Combat Clasp, instituted on November 25, 1942, honored individuals involved in close-quarters hand-to-hand combat during World War II. It was awarded in three classes: Bronze for 15 actions, Silver for 25, and Gold for 50. Eligibility was based on combat actions from December 1, 1942, with earlier service on the Eastern Front considered. Recipients of the Gold Clasp were often granted special honors, reflecting its esteemed status among German infantry. Out of millions in the Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS, 36,400 received the Bronze Class, 9,500 the Silver Class, and only 631 the Gold Class.
