*German, WW2 - c.1939–1940, Waffen-SS Motorised Unit Photograph Archive, Early-War Western Campaign, 22 Original Agfa Lupex Snapshot Photographs*
An exceptional and highly cohesive original group of twenty-two Second World War Waffen-SS private snapshot photographs documenting the activities of an early-war motorised Waffen-SS formation during the opening campaigns of the war, almost certainly connected to operations in France and the Low Countries during 1940.
All photographs are original period prints on matching Agfa Lupex photographic paper with consistent machine-punched serrated deckled borders, strongly indicating a single privately assembled wartime grouping compiled by one soldier or members of the same unit. The photographs provide a remarkably complete visual narrative ranging from pre-deployment imagery in Germany through convoy operations, reconnaissance activity, field camps, occupation service, and candid daily life behind the lines.
The archive includes numerous sharply detailed photographs showing identifiable Waffen-SS personnel wearing early-war field uniforms with distinctive pre-August 1940 piped Sig-rune collar tabs, M36 field tunics with dark bottle-green collars, Schiffchen side caps, Waffen-SS sleeve eagles, and proprietary SS camouflage equipment including reversible camouflage helmet covers and camouflage smocks.
Several images are of particularly high documentary significance, including:
- A photograph of the monumental Reichsadler sculpture at the Luitpoldarena within the Nuremberg Reich Party Rally Grounds at Nuremberg.
- The Reichskriegsflagge flying above a captured European fortress or citadel wall, likely photographed during the Western Campaign.
- Multiple close-up portraits clearly displaying Waffen-SS Sig-rune collar tabs with early twisted silver-and-black piping.
- Motorised convoy scenes showing troop and supply movement through rural Western European landscapes.
- A Waffen-SS motorcycle dispatch rider (Kradmelder) equipped with goggles and camouflage smock beside a military motorcycle bearing apparent SS tactical markings.
- Specialized communications or command vehicles including probable radio vans or field headquarters trucks fitted with roof equipment racks and operational tarpaulins.
- A portrait showing a fragmentary military vehicle registration plate visible within the background of a truck-cab scene, further reinforcing the motorised nature of the unit.
- Candid field-life scenes depicting soldiers shaving, reading Feldpost correspondence, relaxing in roadside camps, and interacting informally with comrades.
- Several photographs showing convoy halts and sentry positions within French civilian estates, villas, and town environments identifiable through characteristic French architectural features including persiennes (louvered shutters), stone quoins, oval œil-de-bœuf windows, and rural courtyard layouts.
- A final observation-post photograph depicting Waffen-SS personnel using field binoculars from elevated terrain overlooking open countryside under heavily overcast skies.
The repeated appearance of motorcycles, communications vehicles, map-reading scenes, observation positions, and mobile field operations strongly suggests the group belonged to a motorised reconnaissance, Nachrichten (signals/communications), or headquarters-support component of an early Waffen-SS formation rather than a static infantry unit.
The collection possesses exceptional internal consistency throughout, with recurring personnel, vehicles, insignia, camouflage equipment, and environmental settings combining to form a genuine chronological campaign narrative rather than an assembled dealer grouping.
Fresh to the market; an entirely unpublished and previously un-researched grouping.
Approx. Measurements – Each photograph approx. 9.5 cm x 6.5 cm (Approx. 3.74" x 2.56").
History Note:
Agfa Lupex paper was one of the principal photographic papers used in Germany during the Third Reich period and is commonly encountered on authentic wartime personal photographs carried by German servicemen. Early-war Waffen-SS snapshot groups displaying identifiable pre-1940 uniform characteristics such as piped collar tabs, M36 tunics, and proprietary SS camouflage equipment are increasingly sought after for their historical and documentary significance. The imagery within this archive strongly reflects the rapid motorised warfare and occupation movements associated with the German Western Campaign of 1940.
*Condition*
Overall good original wartime condition throughout with expected period handling wear, corner creasing, light surface abrasions, minor silvering, and age-related marks. Several photographs display minor edge wear, soft focus, motion blur, or small storage stains consistent with authentic field-used snapshot albums. One or two examples exhibit darker marks or light emulsion wear. All retain strong period character and originality. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
