Description

This is a Red Cross Hewer from World War 2, authorised for daily wear by Red Cross NCO’s and some subordinates. The Pommel has a flattened top and the chappe is decorated with the Red Cross insignia. The hilt is made of white metal with a thin nickel plating. The grips are made from two pieces of black Bakelite secured with 2 screws.

 Its blade is wide with a saw tooth edge on one side, used for removing plaster casts and preparing splints. The tip of the blade was squared off to conform to the Geneva Convention of medical staff not carrying offensive weapons.

No personnel purchases of Hewers were allowed.

*Condition*

This hewer is in very good condition with some light pitting to the blade, in keeping with its age. The hilt has some loss of finish. Please see pictures for more detail as they form part of our condition report.
