Description

*German, WWII, Kriegsmarine High Seas Fleet Badge, 1st Pattern, by Friedrich Orth, Vienna (F.O)*

A fine example of a German Kriegsmarine High Seas Fleet War Badge (Flotten-Kriegsabzeichen), measuring 5.9 cm x 4.5 cm. Fire-gilded wreath with a darkened battleship motif, surmounted by the German eagle and swastika. Reverse with vertical pin, sheet hinge and round wire catch. Maker marked “F.O.” for Friedrich Orth, Wien (Vienna).

Historical Note:
The High Seas Fleet Badge was instituted by Großadmiral Erich Raeder on 30 April 1941 to recognise service on Germany’s capital ships. Award criteria included 12 weeks’ service aboard a battleship or cruiser, participation in a major naval action, or being wounded or killed in action while serving.

Friedrich Orth of Vienna produced the 1st pattern badges, characterised by finely detailed rivet work on the ship, a slightly narrower eagle, and a fire-gilded wreath with darkened ship motif. Compared to the more common Schwerin or Juncker issues, Orth examples are scarcer and highly sought after. Survival rates are limited, as many were lost when vessels went down with their crews.

*Condition*
The badge displays honest age and service wear. The fire-gilding to the wreath retains a strong finish with wear on the high points, while the darkened ship motif shows a pleasing patina. The reverse retains much of its gilt wash, with clear F.O. maker mark. Pin, hinge and catch are intact and functional. Overall, a well-preserved and desirable example. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
