This oil painting shows a small flock of sheep grazing on the hills of Bettws-y-Coed, in North Wales where the artist spent his summers.

Dating from around 1844 to 1856 this is a delightful example, capturing the fleeting nature of weather, atmosphere and light.

This then, is a piece that can be regarded a precursor to impressionism which took grip of the western art world in 1860 and was characterised, as this piece is, by relatively small, thin, yet visible brush strokes that emphasise movement and shifting light, to transport the viewer into the scene.

The canvas is pinned to a refurbished stretcher, measures 10.25 inches across (26 cm) and 8 inches (20 cm) high.

In its frame, it measures 11.75 inches across (30 cm) and 9.75 inches high (24.5 cm).

The piece in its frame weighs 520g.

~ Condition ~

The foreground of the painting’s subject has withstood considerable cracking, while the paler colours in the background have fared better, this is mostly due to varnishes and pigments of the day. However the charm and serenity of this piece has not diminished with the aging.

This piece is ready to hang, we are selling it with the gold-painted frame it came to us in.
The frame is chipped in one or two places.
