Lesley Anne Ivory, now age 88, was born in Luton in 1934 and attended St Albans School of Art. She rose to fame in the 1980s, becoming one of Britain’s most celebrated cat artists. Between 1988 and 2007 she wrote and illustrated 18 books, including ‘Cats Know Best‘ (1988), ‘Meet My Cats‘ (1989), Cats in the Sun‘ (1991) and ‘Cats Among the Toys‘ (1993). She was also the designer for a lovely series of ceramic plates decorated with cats produced by the Danbury Mint and a series of limited edition prints for the World Wildlife Fund. She has taken part in many exhibitions, including several one-woman shows in London, annual shows at the Chris Beetles Gallery, and at Salisbury Museum. In 1993 she had a major exhibition in New York. Her wood engravings have been exhibited at the Summer Exhibition of the Royal Academy. Her later work employed highly decorative backgrounds, but her earlier work, as in this case, was usually set against a simpler or plain background.
