~ Pair Of Circa 1880 Oil Paintings By C Allan Of Porchester Castle And Portsmouth Harbour ~
The first is of the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour with Victoria Pier jutting out from the Square Tower, in Old Portsmouth. Victoria Pier, built in 1842 and the first one in Portsmouth, was used for passenger steamer departures. The conservatory there has long since gone. HMS St Vincent is seen in the distance when she was still afloat in the harbour.
The second is of Porchester Castle, just to the North West of Portsmouth, with its Roman walls. It’s interesting to see the medieval cottages just outside the castle entrance on the right, they appear to be on the site of the castle car park, though many similar buildings remain further up Castle Street.
Both are signed C. Allan. They are both unframed.
~ Condition ~
Both paintings are in good order.
~ Dimensions ~
The oil paintings are each 23 cm (9 inches) wide and 15 cm (6 inches) tall.
