~ Pair Of Staffordshire Spaniel Dog Spill Vases ~
Two fantastic matching vases to sit either side of a stately mantle piece, these are moulded and glazed earthenware figures of King Charles spaniels sat beside tree-trunk vases that resemble trees or bushels when decked with bouquets.
With their proud stature, gold lockets, regal glare and luxurious flowing fur these are typical of the long fashionable and very popular Victorian ornament and date from around 1870.
Collectors items now, the Staffordshire spaniel was the quintessential bourgeois status-symbol ornament. No mantelpiece (or window sill) was complete without a pair of spaniels standing guard.
The popularity of these figures may owe something to Queen Victoria’s own pet spaniel Dash (pictured).
~ Dimensions ~
Both vases are 14 inches tall (35.5 cm).
They’re both 8 inches across (20.5 cm).
Each vase weighs 1.37 kg (so 2.74 kg together).
~ Condition ~
This pair is a late example, when the mass-production was at a height and the application of the glazes was a touch more hurried than on earlier, far more expensive pairs.
That said the condition of these is very good, there are no chips or cracks and only a few imperfections from the firing.
