~ Royal Antediluvian Order Of Buffaloes Collection c1970’s -2000 – Plus 1930 Silver Medallion ~
A large collection of pieces relating to the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes dating from the mid 1970’s up to 2000. Also included is a 1930 Silver
Medallion.
The items are mostly ceremonial wear including sashes, medals etc.
A great majority of the pieces relate to the Exeter lodge and to two gentlemen in particular; Mr Maurice Burnett and Mr Peter Freeman.
The items are as follows:
* 1 Staff
Wood with cloth covering, brass ends and topped with a brass cross with Buffalo emblem and enamelled belt emblem reading ‘Nemo Mortalium
Omnibus Horis Sapit’ or ‘No Man Is Wise At All Hours’. Also inscribed ‘KOM’.
* 1 Large Heavily Decorated Chain of Office
A red and blue cloth sash decorated with various gilt metal and enamel medallions with images and emblems relating to the order, in particular The
Grand Lodge of England.
* 5 Medal Ribbons
Five cloth ribbons, four with gilt metal medals and one with a larger sterling silver medal. The gilt metal medals are variously inscribed with personal
messages. One is named for Exeter.
The sterling silver medal is much grander than the rest with fine detailing and enamel work and is topped with a buffalo.
The medal is inscribed ‘Ye Grandisson Lodge No. 1259, Presented to Bro. J.J.Tarsey K.O.M, for Services Rendered as Secretary’.
It is fully hallmarked for London, Silver, 1930 by the maker L. Simpson & Co. who were jewellers to the Buffaloes and Masons.
* 6 Sashes
The sashes are of cloth, in varying colours with gold bullion ends, and gold thread decoration. Two are named for ‘Ye Old Manor Lodge’ and four are
named for ‘Exeter’. One of the Exeter sashes is named for ‘Bro. Pete Freeman, President’ and has more detail than the others including the ‘cross’
emblem of the order.
* 16 Medals
Sixteen medals with ribbons some of which named and some of which are of sterling silver. They consist of:
Five medals named for ‘Maurice Burnett’. Two of these are from the Exeter Lodge, and three from Ye Old Manor Lodge. They variously date between
1984 and 1994. Four of these are of sterling silver, the fifth is of gilt metal.
Four sterling silver medals named for ‘Peter Freeman’. Three of these are from Ye Old Manor Lodge and one is from the Exeter Lodge. They variously
date between 1984 and 1994.
Four un-named gilt metal medals from various lodges; Ye Otterford Lodge, Ye Oketon Lodge, Wonford Green Lodge and Exeter Lodge.
One of gilt metal, Exeter named ‘Bro. Butcher’ dated 1996.
One of gilt metal, Carilion Lodge, named ‘Bro. Arthur C. Garrett’ dated 1990.
One fully hallmarked silver gilt, Goodwin Lodge, named ‘Bro. Marc. N. Colson’ dated 2000.
* 7 Pouches
A selection of plastic and leatherette pouches. Three are plain and four have marks of the order. Three of which have the name ‘Burnett’ and one with
the name ‘Freeman’.
* 5 Pin Badges
Five various pin badges relating to the order.
* 4 Cummerbunds and 5 Bow Ties
The cummerbunds and bow ties are in various colours, all are plain with no marks etc.
* 1 Small Suitcase
All pieces are held in a small vintage suitcase, seemingly with no reference to the items, simply a storage piece.
~ Dimensions ~
The case measures 48cm (19 inches) by 21cm (8 ¼ inches) by 12cm (4 ¾ inches).
The set weighs 4.34Kg.
~ Condition ~
The head of the staff looks as though it has been damaged and re attached but otherwise the staff is in a good condition with only general wear.
The rest of the pieces are in a nice condition with minimal wear but no damage.
