~ Royal Armoured Corps/Royal Tank Regiment Junior Leader Vellum Skin ¾ Bass Drum ~
The wooden cased drum is well preserved with all its original parts, ropes & leather.
The edge of the drum has been hand painted with the Royal coat of arms, the Boys’ Squadron and Junior Leaders’ Regiment emblem (crossed lances with tank & a scroll underneath the emblem reads “Junior Leaders RAC”) followed by the Royal Armoured Corps badge (a steel fist with arrows around it, “RAC” along the lower edge).
~ Royal Armoured Corps ~
The Royal Armoured Corps (RAC) provides the armour capability of the British Army, with vehicles such as the Challenger 2 Tank and the Scimitar Reconnaissance Vehicle. It was created as a loose association of armoured regiments, both the Royal Tank Regiment (the oldest tank unit in the world, being formed in 1917) and those converted from old horse cavalry regiments.
~ Junior Leaders ~
Junior Leaders was the name given to training Regiments of the British Army that took entrants from the age of 15 who moved on to adult service at the age of 17 and a half.
Their aim was to produce and train the future warrant officers and sergeants for their Corps.
~ Dimensions ~
The diameter of the drum is 28.5 inches (72.4 cm) and the height is 13.5 inches (34.3 cm). It weighs 5.9 kg.
~ Condition ~
The drum is in very good condition. Some minor signs of wearing; the paint is scratched along the edges, with some cracks in the wood from use though the emblems remain clear & untouched. The vellum skin, leather and the ropes look are in good order. It still ‘thumps’ well.
