*US Airforce Majors “Snorkel” Parker Jacket, Vietnam era*
Though this jacket carries a B-3 label, the label may not be original. It is more likely to be The N-3B Parka, also known as the “Snorkel Parka” because the hood can be zipped up, leaving only a small opening (the snorkel) for looking out. This is a heavy-duty winter jacket issued by the United States military during the 1950s and onwards. It was designed to provide warmth and protection in cold weather conditions, making it suitable for use during the Vietnam War. This was the primary parka issued to Air Force personnel during the Vietnam War.
The N-3B Parka features a nylon outer shell that is water repellent and wind resistant. It has a fur-lined hood, with a synthetic fur ruff for added insulation and protection from the elements. Unlike the M-51 and M-65 field jackets, the N-3B Parka does not have a button-in liner. Instead, it is heavily insulated with synthetic materials, throughout the jacket itself.
The N-3B Parka is known for its longer length, extending below the waist, to provide additional coverage and insulation. It features a front zipper with a storm flap to protect against the wind and cold. Additionally, it has multiple pockets for storage, including large front pockets and smaller sleeve pockets.
This is an unusual example bearing the US Air Force insignia and a gold oak leaf epaulet on each shoulder. The United States Air Force’s Major rank insignia is a gold oak leaf, authorized as the insignia of grade at the time the Air Force was created as an independent branch of the United States Military in 1947. The name R.Beers is handwritten inside the jacket.
Size is estimated to be Extra Large.
*Condition*
The parka is in good condition with some stains on front and back and a small tear in the hood lining. Please see photographs as part of the condition report. (Model and hat not included)
