The painting depicts the light cruiser HMS Orion under attack from German Stuka aircraft on the 28th of May, 1941 where she was badly damaged but survived though with much loss of life.
It is signed and dated to the lower right hand side for Instructor Lieutenant H L Hackforth and 1941, who served onboard HMS Orion. Details of the ship and her action off Crete are written to the reverse.
~ Condition ~
The watercolour has a few spots of light foxing and the paper is oxidised with age.

The frame is 42.5 cm (16.75 inches) wide by 35 cm (13.75 inches) tall.
The exposed area of the watercolour is 29 cm (11.25 inches) wide by 22 cm (8.5 inches) tall.
