~ WW1 Royal Navy Air Service Petty Officer’s Cap ~
An original Royal Navy Air Service Petty Officers cap dating from the first world war.
The Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) was the air arm of the Royal Navy, under the direction of the Admiralty’s Air Department, and
existed formally from 1 July 1914 to 1 April 1918, when it was merged with the British Army’s Royal Flying Corps to form the Royal Air
Force, the world’s first independent air force.
The cap is of white cloth with a black leather brim and chin strap.
It has a black cloth band around the circumference and a Petty Officers red and black, crown and eagle embroidered padded cap
badge to the front.
The interior has a blue silk lining and a brown leather sweat band.
There is a cloth name tag sewn to the interior but the name has all but worn away.
~ Dimensions ~
The cap has an inner circumference of 55cm (21 ½ inches), a reasonably small hat size.
It weighs 295g.
~ Condition ~
The leather chin strap has a little split to one end and the cap has a few brown spots to the top. The white cloth of the cap is a little
discoloured in parts from age.
Overall the cap is in a really good condition with only light wear and retains all its original features.
