In 1888, Adolf and Alfred Fréres began making watches in Grenchen, Switzerland. By 1906, the founding brothers had successfully crafted and introduced their inaugural in-house watch with the brand name “Grana”. This name, derived from the Latin “Granacus,” signifying Gretchen. Following World War I, Erwin and Hand, the sons of Alfred, joined the company. In 1939, the new brand name “Certina” was officially registered as a trademark. Despite the introduction of Certina, the name Grana persisted through the 1940s, during which time the British army commissioned a standard watch for its troops. They were lauded as some of the finest mass-produced watches of that era—resilient, precise, and legible, even in the midst of gunfire. From 1949 “Certina” was used as the sole brand name.
*Condition*
The face is in good condition with some wear to the painted lumed Arabic numerals. The stem works to pull to change the time and to wind the watch. The second hand works and the watch appears to keep time. The case has some scratches and marks commensurate with its age and service. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
