WW2, German, Eastern Front Medal, Winter Battle in the East 1941’42. Awarded to Luftwaffe Pilot with Certificate and Photograph.
The certificate tells us that the “Medaille Winterschllacht Im Osten 42” (Winter Battle in the East 1941–42) was awarded to Carl Schulz on 23 Sept 1942 by the Oberstabsarzt Der Fliegerkorpsarzt IV. u. Kommandeur der Lw-San-Abtlg. Signed by a DR J?. The medical staff officer surgeon/dentist comparable to major or lieutenant commander of the 4th Luftwaffe Section. A Luftflotte was operationally divided into one or more Fliegerkorps (“Air Corps”) of varying size. There were a total of 13 Fliegerkorps.
he Eastern Medal was conferred upon Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS members as a recognition of their service “in the struggle against the Bolshevik enemy and the Russian winter” from November 15, 1941, to April 15, 1942. It was also posthumously awarded to those who died in the line of duty in the Soviet Union, earning the nicknames “Frozen Meat Medal” or the “Order of the Frozen Flesh.”
Designed by SS-Unterscharführer Ernst Krauit, the medal, measuring 3.6 cm in diameter, was generally made of zinc and coated in gun-metal color. The concave obverse side displayed a national socialist eagle holding a swastika with laurel behind it. On the reverse side, capital letters read “WINTERSCHLACHT IM OSTEN 1941/42” (“Winter Battle in the East 1941-42”), accompanied by a crossed sword and branch. A helmet and stick grenade adorned the medal loop and outer ring in a polished silver effect. The medal’s dimensions are approximately 44mm by 36mm.
The service ribbon featured a central white-black-white stripe (white for snow, black for fallen soldiers) with red on either side (symbolizing blood).
Medal is 3.6cm diameter.
The included photograph is likely to be of Carl Schulz – he clearly a member of the air corps and on the back of the photograph is the Russian word ПОГАШЕНО for paid off, given that his medal was for service on the Eastern front this seems to fit.
