During the Battle of Britain, the Ministry of Aircraft Production launched a massive public crowdfunding campaign. The government aimed to raise money to build Spitfires, with appeals run by towns, fairgrounds, and even children.

The "Penny" Campaign: The Meccano Ltd. company, through its Dinky Toys line, produced a range of 62a Spitfire fund souvenir pins and badges. Donors received them as tokens for their contributions.

The Funds: The public ultimately raised over £13 million across 1,400 local campaigns. This funded approximately 2,500 aircraft, including the famous "Fun of the Fair" Spitfire funded by the Showmen’s Guild.
