~ WW2 Stevens Stopper II Bomb Disposal Kit ~
A Second World War era ‘Stevens Stopper II’ bomb disposal kit in original wood box.
During WW2 Wing Commander J. Stevens of the RAF Bomb Disposal unit, invented a device called the “Stevens Stopper”. The objective of the device was to introduce a fluid into a ticking type 17, 17A or 17B bomb fuze which could stop the mechanism and render it unable to start again regardless of vibrations or movement.
The method used was to first evacuate all the air from the fuze pocket in the bomb and then introduce a suitable resinous liquid into the fuze pocket under vacuum pressure to ensure penetration into the mechanism of the fuze thus jamming up the works. The device was very effective and very simple.
This is the mk II version.
Included are all the main original components: pump, valves, rubber hose, jubilee clips as well as some of the extra items which would have been used in conjunction and replaced when necessary such as: tin of sugar, tin of Vaseline, oil can.
From what little information we have gathered there would have been a few other miscellaneous items included in the kit, but as with the sugar & Vaseline have been used and not replaced.
The box is also missing the paper ‘contents’ labels from inside the lid.
The kit comes in its original wooden box marked ‘SS II’ to the lid.
~ Dimensions ~
The boxed kit measures 54cm x 29cm x 16cm and weighs 10.1 Kg
