This is a Rawlings, United States Army M38 tanker helmet from World War 2. The helmet is complete with its original leather liner and straps. The basic purpose of tank helmets was to offer the tanker some protection from frequent bumps against the tank’s interior. However, it was becoming increasingly apparent that neither two original designs offered optimal protection as tanks were becoming faster, more agile, and more compact. In 1938, Rawlings, was encouraged to optimise the design as they were the primary football helmet manufacturer at the time, hence the resemblance to American football helmets. This is an iconic WW2 collector’s item.
