~ Framed Print – Nelson At Prayer, On Going Into Battle At Trafalgar c1850’s ~
A nice quality period print of an etching of Lord Horatio Nelson titled ‘Nelson At Prayer, On Going Into Battle At Trafalgar’ presented in
a fantastic Nelson related frame.
The image depicts Lord Nelson In his quarters upon HMS Victory, knelt with eyes raised to the sky as in prayer.
The etching was produced by the French engraver Ferdinand Jean de la Ferté Joubert after an original painting by the English
painter Thomas Jones Barker.
The image was printed by McQueen, and according to sources, the original engraving was declared to the Printsellers Association on
14 June 1854 so it is most likely that this print was produced soon after this date, within a few years.
The etching is presented in a wonderful glazed, gilt wood frame with a Nelson theme dating to the same period as the print.
The frame has moulded badges to each corner depicting the honours awarded to Nelson, the same as those which he wore proudly
emblazoned on his dress uniform.
The honours are: Knight of the Ottoman Order of the Crescent, Knight Grand Cross of the Sicilian Order of St Ferdinand and of Merit,
Knight Grand Commander of the Order of St Joachim and Knight Companion of the British Order of the Bath.
To the top of the frame is the coat of arms of Nelson and to the lower edge is a crest reading ‘Trafalgar’.
~ Dimensions ~
The image measures 34.5cm (13 ½ inches) by 44.5cm (17 ½ inches).
The frame measures 70cm (27 ½ inches) by 84cm (33 inches).
It weighs 4.41 Kg.
~ Condition ~
The image is in good order but with some browning/foxing around the outer edge. The print has a slight wave (isn’t lying totally flat)
but has no creases or damages.
The frame has some damage in the way of chips and cracks to the mouldings, with some of the more delicate parts of the coat of
arms having broken off. The gilt paint is chipped and worn in parts. But in the main the frame is sound and solid.
