*GSTP Army Issue WW2 Black-faced Pocket Watch by Orator Watch Co, Precision*
An Orator Watch Co, Precision, British military, pocket watch. A black enamel dial with Arabic numerals, lumen on the quarters. The face is inscribed “Orator Watch Co, Precision, Swiss Made”. A snap on back and bezel. The back has the army stores numbers 305386 followed by the British Broad Arrow, followed by the letters “G.S.T.P”, (G.S.T.P. stands for General Services Timepiece/Temporary Pattern, which indicates that the watch was purchased by the British government for the armed forces 1939-1945) followed by crossed out army stores number “295022″, “XX” (XX is often thought to mean higher quality but is more likely to mean released from service). The presence of two sets of army numbers tells us that this watch has seen considerable action, as it was issued and then reissued to another soldier. 5cm diameter.
The Orator pocket watch with a high-quality, 15-jewel movement and machine-finished bridges. Nicely jeweled, and with a good regulation. Orator-marked to the main wheel.
Orator pocket watches with black dials are particularly rare.
Orator Watch was a brand of Schild and Co SA Manufacture d’Horlogerie, La Chaux de Fonds, established in 1888: Founded by Arthur Graizely and his brother as Graizely Frères.
