*British, WW2, “John Bull, Free Air Raid Insurance, including Invasion and Bombardment”, Dated 22.01.1941. Issued to Mrs E M Fraver, West Norwood*
The document is an insurance policy from John Bull “Free Air Raid Insurance, including Invasion and Bombardment. Underwritten at Lloyds and Comprehensive Household Benefits. Certificate of Registration.” dated 22.01.1941
It provides a tangible link to the harrowing times of WWII, especially civilian bombing attacks, offering silent testimony to the suffering and losses experienced during the war. It would make a valuable and poignant addition to any collection, particularly for historians specializing in this era.
It is a double sided page, 33cm x 25.4cm, which folds to a small square with the registration details 11cmx 12.7cm. Issued to Mrs E.M. Fraver (unclear), 501B Norwood Rd, W. Norwood SE27. This is a London address in the borough of Lambeth. West Norwood was to see considerable bomb damage in 1944, SE27 was to suffer from 13 V1’s and 1 V2, and 47 people died in the area, (a picture of the damage in nearby Chatworth Way, West Norwood is attached).
This insurance policy was taken out in the midst of the terror of the Blitz (7 September 1940 – 11 May 1941) the German air bombing of civilian areas in London and southern England during WWII. The bombings resulted in the destruction of a quarter-million homes, over 60,000 deaths, including 8,000 children, and nearly 100,000 serious injuries. In 1940, UK government, committed to covering all war-related losses, funded in part by a tax levy on insurance policies that previously excluded such risks. This scheme, now extended to include terrorism and other uninsurable risks, remains in effect today.
