*British, c1751-1810, Brass Flintlock Muff Pistol with Fold-Down Trigger, by Richards of London, Obsolete Calibre*
4.5cm barrel, 15cm overall.
This intriguing flintlock muff pistol features a fold-down trigger and a flat-sided, bag-shaped walnut butt. Stamped on the Lock Richard and on the obverse London, with London Tower private proof marks on the side of the barrel, it bears the hallmark of quality craftsmanship.
Such flintlock pistols were commonly carried for personal protection during the late 18th to early 19th centuries. In the 1700s, there was a growing trend for smaller, more concealable firearms, with some being referred to as “Muff Pistols” because they were often hidden within a muff or slipped discreetly into a pocket. These pistols were favored by both ladies and gentlemen for their practicality and ease of concealment.
The proof marks on this pistol indicate it was tested at the London Tower Private Proof house, which operated from approximately 1751 to 1810. To distinguish civilian firearms from those of the Ordnance, civilian proof marks, such as the crossed sceptres & crown, were used, typically struck twice, one mark above the other, without the Royal Cypher.
The brass lock bears the marking “Richard” on one side and “London” on the other, indicating its origin. There were numerous gunsmiths in London with the surname Richard or Richards during that era.
