All German front-line troops were equipped with distinctive protective footwear known as the Marschstiefel (marching boots), commonly referred to as German Jack boots. While the term “jackboot” is often used to describe any tall, black, pull-on boot, it more accurately refers to those with looser-fitting shafts rather than the more fitted riding boots. In November 1939, a new directive mandated the reduction of the shaft height of newly produced jackboots to around 29cm from 35cm. Despite efforts to conserve leather by introducing Schnurschuhe (low boots), the taller jackboots were never completely phased out.
The jackboot features a pull-on design with a stitched and pegged main sole, pegged half sole, rear seam shaft, and stacked heel. Both hand and machine methods were used for pegging and sole stitching. Most boots were equipped with hobnails, heel irons, and sometimes toe plates to prevent leather wear. While many had steel shanks, not all did. Two pull straps were standard on all boots. Typically, boots were fitted with steel hobnails and heel irons in rows, with 35-40 nails per boot being common. Some boots also had standard horseshoe-type irons with nails driven directly through the rims, along with toe irons attached with 3-5 nails.
