*German, WW2, Kriegsmarine Destroyer War Badge, By Schwerin Berlin 68*
The Destroyer War Badge was instituted on June 4, 1940, by the Commander-in-Chief of the Kriegsmarine, Grand Admiral Raeder. The badge was created to honor the crews of destroyers who had participated in the Narvik campaign. Although initially intended solely for Narvik participants, a subsequent order dated October 22, 1940, extended the award to include all Destroyer, Torpedo Boat, and E-Boat crew members. The badge was designed by Paul Carsberg of Berlin. The badge was worn on the lower part of the left breast pocket of the naval service tunic, beneath the 1st class Iron Cross if awarded. An embroidered cloth version was also produced.
Qualifications for the award before October 10, 1940, included participation in the battles of Narvik. After this date, the qualifications were:
-Wounded in action
-Served on a ship sunk in action
-Participation in three enemy engagements or at least 12 non-enemy sorties
-Outstanding performance or other heroic deeds in a single action
The badge features a side view of a destroyer navigating rough waves, with the ship and waves rendered in oxidized silver. This scene is encircled by a gold oak leaf wreath, surmounted by the national emblem. The badge was constructed from bronze and zinc and includes the correct attachment system: a horizontal pin with a small hook for securing the badge. It is marked “Schwerin Berlin 68,” indicating it was produced by ‘Schwerin & Söhne’ from Berlin.
