This is a very nice example of the typically shortened Yataghan Werndl 1867 for NCO (non-commissioned officer) with rare encountered wooden grips. This bayonet was designed for the Austrian M-1867 Werndl-Holub Rifle. Originally equipped with a 22 1/2″ (57cm) “Yataghan” saber blade, it underwent shortening to 18 1/2″ (47cm) after the 1873 revision of the Werndl-Holub design, leading to the Model 1867/73. The term “Yataghan” originates from the Turkish word meaning “one who lays down,” reflecting the distinctive downward-sweeping double-curve blade profile. This design not only enhances strength and rigidity but also ensures optimal alignment of the hilt and point for efficient thrusting.
Maker marked on the ricasso “GF” which is likely to be the monogram of Gustav Felix (letters of equal size, addorsed used in 1899), next to the double-headed Hapsburg Imperial eagle and a circular logo “A/N Spital”. Whilst this logo has appeared on other bayonets we haven’t been able to identify it, however, Spital am Pyhrn in Austria was known as a center for metalwork during the Austro-Hungarian period, and it is possible that this bayonets might have been produced. On the obverse “W” and on the quillon regimental markings are obscured by heavy pitting. 47.2cm blade is steel, single-edged and fullered on both sides. Grips are two piece wooden grips with large steel rivets – 3 on one side and 2 on the other and large leaf spring securing screw. External spring and catch with large push button. Crossguard form: long lower section, straight then sweeping forward to form hook-like quillon and with characteristic ball above the muzzle ring. Comes complete with the correct original shortened scabbard.

This is a unique bayonet in good condition. There is some rusting and pitting to the blade commensurate with age and service, the button works, there is some surface damage to the grip, the quillon is heavily pitted. The scabbard fits securely. The black scabbard is in good condition with chips and dents that are commensurate with age and service related wear and tear. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
