*British, WW2, The Defence Medal, 1939-1945, with Ribbon*
The Defence Medal, established by the United Kingdom in May 1945, was awarded to citizens of the British Commonwealth for non-operational military service and specific civilian contributions during the Second World War.
The obverse, designed by Humphrey Paget, features a left-facing bareheaded effigy of King George VI, encircled by the inscription “GEORGIVS VI D:G:BR:OMN:REX F:D:IND:IMP.” (George VI, by the grace of God, King of all the Britain’s, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India).
The reverse, created by Harold Parker, depicts the Royal Crown atop an oak sapling, flanked by a lion and lioness, above stylized waves. The years “1939” and “1945” appear at the top corners, with “THE DEFENCE MEDAL” inscribed in two lines in the lower exergue.
The ribbon is green with a flame-orange centre stripe flanked by narrow black bands. The orange represents enemy attacks on Britain’s landscape, the green symbolizes the countryside, and the black signifies the blackouts during air raids.
