Here we have an exceptional named and attributed sword to a British Militia Artillery Regiment circa 1900.

The sword is an exceptional example of the three bar sword based on the 1821 Light Cavalry sword.

The sword still has its scabbard, sword knot and sword bag.

The sword was purchased and manufactured in 1900 by Wilkinson for a Hugh Frederick Gutch of the Kent Militia Royal Garrison Artillery. Gutch was born in approximately 1883 in Lancashire so this would make this most likely his first sword for military use as a junior militia officer at the age of seventeen.

The sword and scabbard has been totally plated most likely with nickel or chrome, the wire wrapped grip is of a knurled dark hardwood. The sword has a patent tang grip.

The etchings are exceptional with beautiful scroll work, the markings for the Royal Garrison Artillery and Kent Militia as well as the monogram for Hugh Frederick Gutch.

The sword’s number is 38268.

The sword bag has ‘WILKINSONS PALL MALL LONDON’ on one side and ‘H.F.G.’ on the other.

~ Dimensions ~

The sword is 42 inches (107 cm) long.

The blade is 34.5 inches (88 cm) long.

The set weighs 1.98 Kg.

~ Condition ~

The sword is in almost mint condition with some very few spots of rust damage to the scabbard, some spots of blackening to the blade and a few missing areas of stitching on the carry bag.
