~ Large Gilt Spelter Statue of Neptune By Gustave Trouillard ~
A large and dramatic hollow body spelter statue of the Roman God Neptune after a sculpture by Gustave Trouillard.
Gustave Trouillard was a 19th century French sculptor. Born in Paris, Trouillard was a Salon exhibitor from 1844 to 1853.
Neptune is depicted standing with one leg knelt on the head of a sea dragon which curls around his other leg. He carries a trident in one hand with the other arm raised, pointing a finger to the distance. He rather reminds me of the early internet meme “Techno-Viking”!
The figure is upon a decorated spelter base with the legend ‘Neptune’ within a ‘frame’.
Neptunes body has a gilt finish whilst his robe, the dragon and base all have a greenish patina.
The statue is signed ‘G. Trouillard’.
~ Dimensions ~
The statue has a base diameter of 26.5cm (10 ½ inches) and stands at 76cm (30 inches) in height.
It weighs 17.7Kg
~ Condition ~
The piece has some small marks/dings and wear to the finish in parts but has sustained no major damages.
Neptunes trident is a little bent out of shape near the top and has a little rust but is in a decent order overall.
