Description

*Parker Hale Enfield 1861 Musketoon 577Cal. Deactivated*

Parker Hale 1861 Enfield Musketoon' Muzzle Loading Rifle with Ramrod. Serial Number 6346. 577 Cal. Barrel Length 24.125" or 610mm.
Engraved lockplate marked "1861 Enfield" adjacent to a crown over "PH". The stock is marked "Parker Hale Ltd. Deactivation certificate.

The Pattern 1861 Enfield musketoon was a shorter version (610 mm or 24 inches) of the Pattern 1853 Enfield rifled musket. It had a faster rifling twist rate and more rifling grooves, making it as accurate as the longer rifle at shorter ranges. The shorter barrel improved portability and ease of reloading. The British Army issued the Pattern 1861 to artillery units and it was also imported by the Confederacy during the American Civil War for use by artillery and cavalry. The Pattern 1861 musketoon, often called a musketoon but more accurately a carbine due to its rifled barrel, was highly regarded for its handling and lethal range of up to 500 yards. It was in service 1861-1889.

Alfred Gray Parker founded a rifle manufacturing company in 1890. In 1910, he invited his nephew, Alfred Thomas Corbyn Hale, to become a partner in the company. In the early 1970s, the Birmingham gun-maker Parker-Hale began selling reproduction Enfield rifles to both reenactors and live fire enthusiasts, or “skirmishers.” These are considered among the highest quality reproductions of Civil War-era rifles and rifle- muskets ever produced.9

*Condition*
This Musketoon/Carbine is in great condition. There are some signs of wear and tear with one or two minor dings to the woodwork. Please see photograph as part of the condition report.
