Description

*WW1, Dated 1916, Elaborate, Trench Art, Brass Vase, Made from French Shell Casing - Remington UMC 75 DE C 181 L4 16 C PCFD*

Brass vase elaborately engraved with two poppies together and a hammered effect. Engraved on the shell casing of the 75 mm De Campagne, the ubiquitous Matériel de 75mm Mle 1897 Field Gun used in WWI and WWII by the French and other countries. This case would have been made by Remington on contract for the French and the date is April 1916 as shown by the "4 16" after the Lot number. Soldiers and prisoners of war created trench art using the remnants and secondary materials of wartime, providing a window not only into their sentiments and thoughts regarding the conflict but also shedding light on their environment and the resources at their disposal.

337mm x 85mm

*Condition*
This commemorative brass shell is in excellent condition with some minor age related wear and tear. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
