The M56 submachine-gun was developed during the 1950s. It is a Yugoslavian submachine gun chambered in 7.62×25mm Tokarev, designed for use with the Yugoslav People's Army. It is based on the wartime German MP40, but is of simpler construction and is easily distinguished from the MP 40 by its increased length and curved magazine. Despite not being a member of the Warsaw Pact, Yugoslavia began to make use of Soviet-calibre military cartridges. The M56 was therefore chambered for the 7.62 x 25mm pistol and SMG round. Initially a state-funded product, it was later produced by Zastava Arms and saw use in a number of conflicts following the breakup of former Yugoslavia.

The Yugoslavian Coat of Arms was designed by by the artist Đorđe Andrejević-Kun and officialy adopted in 1946 constitution. It featured six torches, surrounded by wheat with a red star at its top, burning together in one flame; this represented the brotherhood and unity of the six federal republics forming Yugoslavia: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia. 29 November, 1943, which was the day the communist Anti-Fascists reestablished the “Republic” of Yugoslavia.
