Description

*Original Framed Print, by Colonel P.H Smitherman, "Captain Royal Scots Greys 1844", Published c.1962*

This sought after print was originally published in 1962 by © Hugh Evelyn and drawn by Colonel Philip Henry Smitherman, Royal Corps of Signals (1910-1982), a renowned military artist.

Framed: 355mmx287mm

Established in 1681 as the Royal Regiment of Scots Dragoons, the Greys adopted grey horses in 1700. Evolving through various titles, they became the Royal Scots Greys (2nd Dragoons) before merging with the 3rd Carabiniers to form The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers and Greys). Renowned for capturing the French 45th Regiment's Eagle at Waterloo, they earned the nickname 'Birdcatchers.' This officer's dress reflects the regiment's attire just before the Crimean War. The distinctive bearskin caps of the Greys set them apart from other Dragoon Guards and Dragoons who wore helmets. In active service, the uniform would resemble modern battle-dress with removed epaulettes and sabretache. Throughout history, the Royal Scots Greys' headgear remained unique, earning them the right to wear a grenadier cap for their conduct at the battle of Ramillies, featuring thistle embroidery and evolving in size over time.
