Description

*British Royal Navy, 1884-89, Pair of Egypt Medals: Egypt Medal  - F.W. Curtis Boy 1st Class HMS Briton Undated, Khedive's Star 1884-6*

The Egypt Medal, F.W. Curtis, Boy 1st Class, HMS Briton, Undated (Sudan 1884-1889)
The Egypt Medal 1882–1889) was awarded to British Army and Royal Navy personnel for service during the 1882 Anglo-Egyptian War and subsequent Sudan campaigns (1884-1889). About 200 medals, mostly without clasps, were issued to H.M.S. Briton crew members for service in the Red Sea Sudan (British Battles & Medals', Seventh edition, 2006). A "Boy 1st class" was a trainee aged 16-18 who had advanced from "Boy 2nd class" after showing proficiency in seamanship and earning a conduct badge, after 9-18 months apprenticeship, with a pay increase upon promotion. The medal's obverse features Queen Victoria's veiled head with the Latin inscription "VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX." The reverse shows the Sphinx with 'EGYPT' above. Medals for the 1882 campaign were dated "1882"; those for Sudan (1884-1889) were undated.

The Khedive's Star 1884-6
All Egypt Medal recipients were also eligible for the Khedive's Star. The Khedive's Star, established by Tewfik Pasha, was awarded for campaigns in Egypt and Sudan between 1882-1891. It features a five-pointed bronze star with the Sphinx and pyramids on the obverse and Tawfiq Pasha's crowned monogram on the reverse. This is dated 1884-1886, signifying operations from 26 March 1884 to 7 October 1886, including the Nile expedition to relieve General Gordon besieged at Khartoum and for the 1885 operations near Suakin. The medal was made by Henry Jenkins and Sons of Birmingham.

HMS Briton
HMS Briton, launched at Sheerness Dockyard in November 1869, was commanded by Captain Rodney Maclaine Lloyd from 1884 to 1887 during the East Indies and Sudan campaigns. The ship was decommissioned in 1887.

Condition*
Both ribbons have been cut. The medals are in otherwise very good condition with expected wear commensurate with age. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
