This Pattern 1856 British Sword Bayonet was designed for the Model 1853 .577 calibre Enfield rifled infantry short-musket. In addition to being issued to British units, these rifles and bayonets were also sold in large quantities to both Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War.

The 578mm blade features a flat spine with a broad single fuller on both sides. The Yataghan-style blade has a 180mm upper false edge. The ricasso is stamped with a clearly visible King's head mark, the maker's mark for the Weyersberg Company of Solingen, Germany, along with the British Solingen Inspector's stamp. The sharply beaked pommel also bears another Solingen inspector's stamp. The crosspiece is marked with the rack or issue number "124."

The beaked pommel, with a well-rounded end, houses a broad and deep T-shaped attachment slot. A short lead to the mortise slot confirms this as a true 1856 model. The small, plain press stud on the left side operates the locking catch via a long steel leaf spring recessed within the right side of the pommel and grip. The back of the pommel is straight and flat, with the underside rounded, meeting the grips vertically. The two-piece black chequered leather grips are secured by four small steel rivets on the left side, while the right grip is held by three rivets and the leaf spring securing screw. The straight steel crosspiece has a lower guard that tapers to a swept-forward disc finial, and an upper guard that forms a full muzzle ring topped by a swept-forward oval finial. The interior muzzle ring sits almost flush with the tang of the blade, with an internal diameter of approximately 21mm.

The bayonet is complete with its original leather scabbard featuring steel mounts.

*Condition*
The blade is in excellent condition. The blade is clean from pitting and nocks and only has mild discolouration commensurate with age and service. Good clear markings. The press stud and external spring locking mechanism work well. The leather grip scales are in good condition with some signs of wear commensurate with age and use. The scabbard is in excellent condition with stitching still intact. The scabbard fits securely. Please see photographs as part of the condition report.
