This is a prime example of a Russian 1910 Maxim machine gun used during World War II. Unlike many other nations, Russian infantry typically kept the gun’s wheeled mount attached to enhance its mobility. This particular gun, a World War II, dated 1944, Model 1910 Maxim manufactured at the Tula Factory, is equipped with the Russian wheeled Sokolov mount and front shield. The top cover bears the prominent “Star with Arrow” marking, indicating Tula as the manufacturer, along with the production year, 1944. All visible serial numbers appear to match, and it retains its original flip-up rear sight, adjustable from 400 to 2,000 meters, along with an inverted “V” front sight. The set includes a matching ammo box and inert clips.
The Maxim machine gun, initially designed by Hiram Maxim in the early 1880s, was one of the most influential military weapons of the 20th century. It was the first truly self-sustaining heavy machine gun, operating solely by utilizing the energy from firing rounds. Various armies, including the British in 1880, Imperial Germany in 1899, and Russia in 1905, adopted it. One of the most recognizable features of the Maxim is the large water-filled jacket surrounding the barrel, holding seven quarts of water to cool it during continuous fire. The Russian model featured an oversized “tractor cap” on top of the water jacket, allowing crews to easily fill it with snow during winter operations. This feature was adapted from Finnish Maxim machine guns captured during the Russo-Finnish War (1939-40). The water jacket enabled the gun to fire about 500 rounds before the water began to boil, and after 2,000 rounds, the water would evaporate completely and need to be refilled.
This gun has been deactivated to the current standards.
