Description

*British, Late WW2, HMS Tapir, Three Original Photographs and Model of Triton Class Submarine*

The model features an unnamed Late WW2 British submarine, likely T-Class. Accompanied by three original photographs of HMS Tapir, one dated 1944 and two dated 1966. These photographs originally formed part of the Lou Britton British Submarine Collection, which was acquired by the Royal Navy Submarine Museum, Gosport in 2007. HMS Tapir was a British Group 3 T-class submarine built by Vickers-Armstrong in Barrow-in-Furness during World War II. She is the only Royal Navy vessel named after the tapir.

Approximate Dimensions:

Royal Navy Service:
-Laid down on 29 March 1943, launched on 21 August 1944, and commissioned on 30 December 1944.
-Achieved notable success by sinking the German submarine U-486 in the North Sea on 12 April 1945.

Dutch Service:
-Loaned to the Royal Netherlands Navy on 12 July 1948 and renamed HNLMS Zeehond.
Conducted a notable voyage to Curaçao in 1949, performing gravity measurements and a long snorkel trip.
-Returned to the Royal Navy on 15 July 1953 and recommissioned as Tapir on 16 December 1953.

HMS Tapir was scrapped at Faslane in December 1966.

The T-class submarines, designed in the 1930s, were the Royal Navy’s standard ocean patrol submarines. Of 53 built, they were active in the North Sea, Mediterranean, and Far East, despite limited opportunities to disrupt German shipping early in the war due to heavily mined waters and scarce targets.
